Four people were taken to a hospital for examination Sunday after a carbon monoxide build up was found in the Bruegger's Bagel Bakery in the 6100 block of East Broadway, across the street from Park Place, a Tucson Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The potentially deadly, odorless, colorless gas built up in the shop when an oven exhaust fan stopped working, Capt. Tricia Tracy said.

The leak was discovered at 10:40 a.m. after medics went to the bakery on a sick-person call and found four people complaining of feeling ill and showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, Tracy said.

She said all were expected to be examined and released.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache, nausea, vomiting and in later stages, redness of the skin, Tracy said.

At least eight people were evacuated for part of the day from the bagel shop and adjacent businesses, Tracy said.

All the businesses were scheduled to open Monday, Tracy said.
