ChicagoTribune.com - November 6, 2007

One man died over the weekend and another was seriously injured when a gas heater malfunctioned and expelled carbon-monoxide fumes in a Little Village home, authorities said Monday.

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Chicago police responded to the home in the 2200 block of South Sacramento Avenue, where the men were found unresponsive, Officer Tom Polick said.

One of the men, Francisco Ortega, 61, who lived in the home, was taken to St. Anthony Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

On Monday, the office determined Ortega died of carbon-monoxide intoxication.
