Carbon monoxide sickens family in St. George
The Salt Lake Tribute (SLTRIB.COM) - August 27, 2007

A family of four in St. George was taken to the hospital Saturday for treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police said family members on Friday were trying to charge the battery on a car in the garage of their home near 1100 North and 1600 West and inadvertently left the car running when they went to bed.

The mother and father awoke around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, experiencing difficulty breathing. The father called 911, and officers arrived and evacuated the family and next-door neighbors.

Officers searched the house for more victims because the father was so disoriented he could not tell them if anyone else was in the house, police said.

Fire crews measured the CO levels in and around the house. Police said the equipment usually sounds an alarm when it reads levels of 40 parts per million. The readings were 250 ppm inside the home and 500 ppm in the garage, police said.

The readings at the neighbors' door was above 40 ppm, so they were evacuated, too. The neighbors were allowed to return after fire crews ventilated the residences.
