12 sickened by carbon monoxide at church school in Portsmouth
WVEC - January 27, 2009

PORTSMOUTH – A carbon monoxide leak sent 12 people, including 10 children, to hospitals for treatment.

Investigators determined that the leak came from a boiler on the first floor of Centenary United Methodist Church on Cedar Lane.

Around 4:00 p.m., students and staff complained of headaches and vomiting and a staff member called 911.

Officials confirmed the church did not have carbon monoxide detectors.

Two children and one adult were treated and released from Bon Secours Maryview Hospital.

Ambulances transported youngsters to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk.

CHKD spokesman Greg Lampman said the eight children were treated and released that evening.

The children range in age from two-and-a-half to 14 years.

One adult was taken to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

Fire units and ambulances were on the scene evacuating everyone inside and then airing out the building.

Fire officials say the building contained enough carbon monoxide for those inside to experience mild poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, nausea and fatigue.
